Giving (21/01/10)

$250 to tithe account

10/01/10 Finding it hard not to doubt that God will provide all we need. Looking at the budget it’s so easy to worry about how we’ll get by. Faith often requires us to step forward without being able to see beyond the step right in front of us, it’s hard but necessary.  Fighting the urge to give a little less in order to feel more secure, please pray for us that we wont give in and will continue to trust God completely.

16/10/10 Was reminded this last week that simply giving money isn’t the deal, we need to give our time and serve as well. That’s something we knew we needed to do but finding it hard when we don’t currently attend a specific church. We need to live lives that share the love of God, not just give money away. We need to find where God wants us to give, both our time and our money.

Another big news item for us is that we’re going to have another baby in August! We are SO excited and can’t wait for Anabelle to be a big sister. We need to trust God that He will continue to provide everything we need, especially with the extra costs of a baby.

As always we’d really appreciate your prayers and your comments/encouragements, please feel free to say hi!

God’s Provision

21/01/10 Today we saw God provide for us again. We needed some cash to get a tree removed from our yard as part of the landscaping project but didn’t have it. I had unused gym equipment for sale on the bulletin board at work that wasn’t getting any bites until today when a young guy called about it and came round and bought it! Right when we needed it, God provided, Awesome!

God encouraged me today to keep pursuing Him by giving me an opportunity to help a young youth pastor in the area. I was feeling really flat and discouraged about my future path in ministry but God used this to spark the flame again and encourage me to keep being faithful to His calling even when I can’t see the next step. That was a lesson I needed to learn, again! 😉

Put Your Faith Where Your Money Is

This post is part of the Tithe Experiment series

Some of you may be asking why we’re doing this, why are we putting ourselves through the uncertainty and uncomfortableness that comes from giving more than it seems we can afford. The answer to that is not simple, but for us, it has to do with the “faith” we seem to place in money and security.

Having money and security is not a bad thing, but when we start to trust and draw comfort from them more than we do God we’re entering dangerous territory.

Sam and I want to follow God, we want to follow His plan for our lives because we believe it’s far better than anything we could think up for ourselves. Money, security and possessions are all finite, they aren’t permanent and they will cease to exist, we can’t take any of it with us when we die.

God however is infinite, all-knowing, all loving and all-powerful. He exists beyond time and space and He knows what’s best for us. He’s not pushy or demanding, He never forces us to follow Him but waits for us to realise that His ways are the best ways. And that’s really what this is all about, we want to acknowledge that His ways are the best ways and we want to follow them.

For us that means we need to break free of the false trust we place in our finances and security because it’s getting in the way of us following God. Our desire is to see our lives changed, to completely trust in God, follow Him and serve Him in whatever capacity that might be. We believe this is what God is calling us to do, not only for our benefit but for the benefit of those that journey with us.

We believe that God will speak to others through our journey and our prayer is that you will be encouraged to place your trust solely in God, to know Him, serve Him and follow Him so that He may be glorified and many may turn to Him.

Thank you for journeying with us, we’d love to hear your thoughts, comments, encouragements, whatever – feel free to comment below.

Tithe Journal #1

This post is part of the Tithe Experiment series
7 Jan 2010 – first payday of the year and the beginning of our ‘experiment’ of giving more and trusting God to provide for us. I set up the tithe account and our first payment should be in there by Monday. I get paid fortnightly (every two weeks) so we’ll be making payments twice a month.

$250 to tithe account

I need to find a car parking space in town that is secure and within our budget. I currently pay $30/w for the cheapest spaces but I have to get in super early just to get a spot. I’d really love a secure spot so I can spend more time at home in the morning with the family.

We’re looking for a bigger family car.  We have our eye on one but need to work out if we can afford it. That would mean getting a great trade in on our current car and good finance.

We’d really like to get part of our backyard landscaped for our daughter to play on. We havent had much rain in, oh say five years, and the yard is a dust bowl. Its going to cost about $5,000 to do.

I’m going back to school this year to complete my theology training and probably dropping back to four days a week at work. Add to that the tuition fees, rent, fuel, food etc, this year is going to be faith-filled for us!

We need to find a church home this year and attend regularly. This is a difficult decision for us and we really need some guidance from God.

We’d really appreciate your prayers and support and would love to share this journey with you so please keep in touch and let us know how we can pray for you as well.

God’s Provision

I’m currently in contact with an estate agent in town that has secure 24/7 access car spaces for rent in a nearby apartment building for $40/w!! I just visited a site and there it was and it looks like it’s just what I need. God you are awesome!!

8/1/10 This may sound trivial to you but today Sam stopped by the grocery store to pick up some more baby wipes. We usually buy them by the box (480 for $20) but today the store had another brand on clearance for $12. It’s not coincidence that Sam happened to be at the store at that time and get the last two bags, its God’s provision! Praise Him!

The Tithe Experiment

This post is part of the Tithe Experiment series

In late 2009, Samantha and I were deeply challenged about how much we trust God to provide for our every need. This year will bring considerable change to our lives (more on this later) and more than ever we’ll need to believe that God will provide for us.

It’s interesting that the first thing we think of in these situations is our finances. Will we have enough money to pay the rent and the bills? We should really tighten the budget, spend less, save more and make sure we have enough money to get by.

These are all wise things to do and we’ll be sitting down to go over the budget very soon, but there was one other thing that we knew we needed to do.

Through a series of events and what can only be the work of God, both Sam and I looked at each other and had one of those moments where you swear you’ve just read each other’s mind. In the midst of talking budgets, finances and change, we decided that what we actually needed to do is to give more.

Sounds crazy doesn’t it? When you know things are going to get tighter the last thing you think of is giving more money away right?

We havent been regular ‘givers’ over the last year, both giving to God’s work (called tithing) and to those in need and so decided that 2010 will be the year we put our faith to the test and give as much as we can. Sam and I believe that you can’t out-give God and that giving generously and trusting that God will provide is a huge part of authentically following God. When we give sacrificially God is honoured and He will give back to us so that we have everything we need.

So, we’ve set up an account where 10% of our gross income will go and be used to give regularly back to God. We will also keep a weekly journal of our giving, our needs and God’s provision, and will share that here on our blog as both an encouragement and a testament to God’s faithfulness.

It’s a bold move and a risky one, we can’t make God do anything or hold up His “end of the deal”, all we can do is trust that He is faithful and will take care of us and meet our needs just as He has promised (Matthew 6:25-34 The Bible).

So please journey with us, pray for us and share with us as we seek to follow God’s plan for our lives in 2010.

Ed & Sam
