Making Changes in 2011

I’m excited about 2011!

This year I’m taking a risk, following my dream and stepping out to make things happen.

For a long time I’ve been seeking opportunities to live my passion, to do what I love and be able to make a living from it. I’ve decided that the time is now, if I’m going to be true to myself and true to my value of living an authentic life, then I need to challenge myself, confront my fear and step out and give this a red-hot go.

So, I give you Edwards Coaching!

Coaching, mentoring and facilitation have always been my passion and where a lot of my strengths are. I long to see people, businesses, churches and organisations living their lives to their fullest potential, excelling in what they do, and living with Purpose, Direction and Meaning.

Edwards Coaching is the result of over 12 years of experience helping people find purpose, direction and meaning and helping them to achieve their goals.

This is me, following my passion and seeking to make a difference in this world.

It’s exciting and its daunting, it’s a world full of unknowns but it’s one that I’m ready to embrace because I want to build the life I want to be living!

I’d really appreciate your support in this venture, please visit the website, pass on my details to your networks (twitter, Facebook, etc, I would REALLY appreciate this!) and let me know what you think!

I’m more than happy to chat with anyone interested in reaching their goals or wanting facilitation or workshop services, the internet means nowhere in the world is out of reach and that’s exciting!

I’m especially interested in helping Churches and Not for Profits so please drop me a line so we can chat about how I can serve you.

So this is my challenge for 2011, to work hard and follow my dream to establish my business helping others.

What are you going to achieve this year, what are your goals? Let’s share them and help each other to achieve them!

Cake and the World Cup

It’s World Cup Soccer time and what better way to celebrate than with cake… right?? 😉

At work we’ve caught World Cup fever with work teams being assigned World Cup Pools to follow, an office sweep, decorating competitions and themed morning teas and even a planned lunch. There are prizes for the work area whose team wins the Cup, has the best decorations and the individual whose team wins the sweep.

I’m optimistic with our work area’s pools, we’ve drawn

Group A: Mexico, South Africa, France, Uruguay
Group G: Brazil, Portugal, Ivory Coast, North Korea

There are some soccer powerhouses there so fingers crossed! In the sweep I’m pretty much sunk, I drew Greece – could be worse I could have drawn Australia! (I’m under no illusions as to my country’s (in)ability to play soccer at World Cup level!)

So what does this have to do with cake? My work team was on morning tea and my amazing wife pulled off this amazing cake!! Not only is the World Cup in South Africa but they are one of the teams in my pool so it was fitting that we represent.

It took about half an hour to decorate and thanks to some creative thinking by Sam we managed to keep all the sprinkles on between a yellow musk stick and some white chocolate raspberry bullets!

It’s almost Ace of Cakes worthy 😛 and it made for a great morning tea! Sam you are amazing and you never cease to amaze me, I love you!!

Isn’t it great!?! What are you doing to celebrate the World Cup?

The Soft, Gentle Voice of God

I was feeling really flat this morning, quite emotional and insecure. Some days life just gets to you, you know? I’m doing my best to follow God, seek Him and His plan for my life but sometimes its just tough going. I begin to doubt my calling, doubt that God knows what He’s doing. So many questions “when will I see the next step? When will God provide for us? Why am I stuck in this job when I want to be doing so much more?”

I needed to hear from God today  so I went to Examen.Me and it randomly chose an Old Testament passage for me.

The passage was Genesis 25:19-34 and this is what God spoke into my heart as I read and reflected on it:

Do not despise what I have placed in your heart, what I have given to you. It is right to want to be more than you are but you must first be who I am calling you to be… connect with me, trust in me and follow me. Don’t look too far ahead, do not try to predict what I will do, just trust that I will lead you, guide you and provide for you.

Don’t sell your birth right as Esau did, do not settle for the “food” of this world for it will not satisfy, but wait for Me, trust in Me, pray to Me and learn from Me, I will sustain you, I will raise you up and I will fulfil My promise to you…

I love how amazing God is, forever faithful to His promises and loves to speak into our lives.

Thank you God for speaking to me this morning, for responding to me as I cried out to You. May this blessing you have given me also bless others.

A Time to Learn

So yesterday my last lot of textbooks arrived and it hit me that, yes I’m about to dive back into the world of education once again.

I’ve decided that it’s time to finish my Theology studies in order to better prepare myself for what God has for me in the future. If you know my story, you’ll know that I was a youth pastor for ten years and worship director for three before leaving those positions because I needed fulltime work to provide for my growing family.

I know deep inside that ministry is my calling, it’s what makes me want to get up in the mornings. I don’t know where or in what capacity it will be, but I know that its wise for me to prepare now for what it to come.

I’ll be studying part-time by distance education while continuing to work fulltime, at least for now. I’m exploring if we can afford for me to go part-time at work but for now it’ll be five days of work and then my study.

Sounds a little crazy and if you’ve been following our Tithe Experiment you’ll know that we’re taking a huge step in faith this year with our finances and that our second child is due in August, so to be honest I’m not sure how I’ll cope, but I know that I have to trust that God will lead us through.

I’m after some advice, have you had any experience working and studying at the same time? Do you have any tips/time savers/advice etc that you can send my way? I’d appreciate all the help I can get!

The Tithe Experiment

This post is part of the Tithe Experiment series

In late 2009, Samantha and I were deeply challenged about how much we trust God to provide for our every need. This year will bring considerable change to our lives (more on this later) and more than ever we’ll need to believe that God will provide for us.

It’s interesting that the first thing we think of in these situations is our finances. Will we have enough money to pay the rent and the bills? We should really tighten the budget, spend less, save more and make sure we have enough money to get by.

These are all wise things to do and we’ll be sitting down to go over the budget very soon, but there was one other thing that we knew we needed to do.

Through a series of events and what can only be the work of God, both Sam and I looked at each other and had one of those moments where you swear you’ve just read each other’s mind. In the midst of talking budgets, finances and change, we decided that what we actually needed to do is to give more.

Sounds crazy doesn’t it? When you know things are going to get tighter the last thing you think of is giving more money away right?

We havent been regular ‘givers’ over the last year, both giving to God’s work (called tithing) and to those in need and so decided that 2010 will be the year we put our faith to the test and give as much as we can. Sam and I believe that you can’t out-give God and that giving generously and trusting that God will provide is a huge part of authentically following God. When we give sacrificially God is honoured and He will give back to us so that we have everything we need.

So, we’ve set up an account where 10% of our gross income will go and be used to give regularly back to God. We will also keep a weekly journal of our giving, our needs and God’s provision, and will share that here on our blog as both an encouragement and a testament to God’s faithfulness.

It’s a bold move and a risky one, we can’t make God do anything or hold up His “end of the deal”, all we can do is trust that He is faithful and will take care of us and meet our needs just as He has promised (Matthew 6:25-34 The Bible).

So please journey with us, pray for us and share with us as we seek to follow God’s plan for our lives in 2010.

A Time to Remember

As the year draws to a close and with the crazy that can at this time of the year,  I needed to stop and reflect upon this past year. It has been a year of joy and a year of struggle but all in all it has been a great year. As a family we have celebrated and remembered the lives of those we love. The first birthday of our daughter, the amazing achievements of our family members and the memory of the one who has gone Home.

Personally this year has been challenging and looking back through my posts I can see they reflect that. It’s been a year of tough decisions, a year of learning patience in the midst of confusion and a year of simply being diligent and doing my best in what God has laid before me. It hasn’t been easy, at times it has brought me to tears, but through the difficult has come growth, wisdom and understanding.

I’ve continued to learn that God is ever faithful, ever-loving and ever gracious. In the midst of trouble and uncertainty He has been my stronghold, my light and my life. I have learnt that trusting Him is the best thing I can ever do and I will continue to do so because He is faithful.

As I look back and reflect I can’t help but look to the future. The events of the past 12 months have begun to shape the next 12 in my life. More than ever I have sensed the call into full-time ministry and this coming year will allow me to continue to prepare for this calling.

We look forward to seeing our daughter continue to grow, learn and develop, to see her character grow and personality blossom. We embrace the opportunities we will have to build and strengthen our marriage and personally I look forward with eager anticipation to deepening my knowledge of the amazing and wonderful woman I’m married to.

We look forward to re-engaging with a local church and seeking opportunities to be God’s hands and feet to our community and our world. Most of all we look forward to another year of growing closer to God and learning how to fully devote our lives to Him, for nothing can ever separate us from His love and there is no better purpose in life than to know and love God.

Thank you to all of you who have visited this site, commented and contributed to the conversation. I truly appreciate and value your wisdom and advice and look forward to continuing the conversation in 2010.

May the God of all peace bless you and keep you. May you know the fullness of His mercy and love in 2010.

If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog you’ll know that this year has been one of changes for our family. It’s also been a year of waiting to see what God has for us as we look to the future and where He wants us to be.

One of those situations was where I would be permanently employed. For the last 23 months I have been acting in a higher position at work. The salary level that came with meant that Sam didn’t have to go back to work and could be a full-time stay-at-home-mum which is what we both wanted. It was a test of faith for us to go month by month wondering if/when my acting may finish and we’d have to reassess our situation.

Last week, however I was successful in an open selection round and was promoted to my higher position permanently which is just fantastic! I feel really validated that my hard work and efforts have been recognised and its great to have this squared away before Christmas.

It really is true that God is faithful and worthy of our trust and praise. God ALWAYS provides for us, sometimes not as we expect but always with exactly what we need when we need it. It’s taken 12 months of trusting God for this job and He’s blessed us at the time of year when we remember the greatest gift of all – His Son born on earth so that we may be brought back into a relationship with God. It was at times tough, we did worry and our faith was stretched, but in the end we are better for it. Our faith is stronger and we know once again that God will always meet our needs.

Thank you to every one that was praying for us, we really appreciate it. We’re excited to see where God will lead us in 2010, we have some ideas and some interesting things we want to explore so stay tuned for un update in the new year.

Have a safe and blessed Christmas season, may you know afresh the reason for the season. May God bless you and keep you.
